Supply Chain Control and Predictability For The Great Outdoors

I cannot be the only person who thinks it’s odd that manufacturers and retailers go to great lengths to optimize operations inside their facilities, yet have little supply chain control over the flow of goods immediately outside the walls of their manufacturing plants and distribution centers.

Yard management systems add a lot of value by fostering supply chain predictability, which too few yard managers think to ask for from their technology. Receiving supervisors can predict arrivals by knowing what shipments are destined for their facility and the trailer’s location on its route. Outbound supervisors, on the other hand, can use supply chain control systems to predict equipment needs, so they can allocate trailer types based on the empty trailers on-hand and those inbound.

Trailers are often used for storage as an extension of the warehouse. Having real-time knowledge about what manufacturing parts and supplies are stored in the yard and inbound to the facility is critical for creating supply chain predictability and optimizing safety stock levels to avoid disruptions to manufacturing processes. Vehicle manufacturers use PINC sensors inside manufacturing plants to track final vehicle assembly and finishing exceptions to minimize the time it takes to locate vehicles when missing components arrive. For retailers, PINC tracks dwell times of loaded trailers, making it easy for distribution center managers to track approaching deadlines so they can ensure trucks depart in time to meet customer appointment schedules.

Better supply chain control makes your entire operation more efficient. Contact PINC to request a demo and see the benefits an advanced yard management system can bring to your business.
