What is the BC TEL MultiMedia Gateway?

The BC TEL MultiMedia Gateway is high speed Internet service, and much more.

 Your new MultiMedia Gateway service connects you to the Internet, and to member-only high speed MultiMedia Gateway services, at speeds 50 to 150 times faster than a 28.8 dial-up modem. Using a technology called ADSL, (asymmetric digital subscriber line), you are instantly connected whenever your computer is turned on, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day! What's more, the MultiMedia Gateway allows uninterrupted and simultaneous telephone and computer use over a single telephone line.

With your new BC TEL MultiMedia Gateway service, you have access to a whole new level of content and applications. Your high speed, "always on," connection and user-friendly interface will open the door to a world of new high speed MultiMedia Gateway content and applications and to high speed Internet access.
  • Superior Performance. The BC TEL MultiMedia Gateway provides you with the fastest residential connection currently available. Download from the MultiMedia Gateway or Internet at speeds up to 4 megabits per second and upload data from your computer at up to 640 kilobits per second, eliminating the bottleneck of a dial-up modem.
  • An "Always On" Connection. Don't wait for your modem to dial, and never get busy signals. Your BC TEL MultiMedia Gateway connection connects you to high speed MultiMedia Gateway content and applications and the Internet whenever your computer is turned on, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
  • Maximum use of your existing telephone line. Because the BC TEL MultiMedia Gateway allows your computer and telephone to share a single line, you can talk and surf at the same time.
  • A secure, dedicated connection. Your connection to the Internet and to BC TEL MultiMedia Gateway content and applications is not shared with anyone. With your file sharing properly configured, you have a personal, secure, and permanent connection to protect your private transactions and communications.   • High speed multimedia content and applications. The BC TEL MultiMedia Gateway is more than just a fast connection to the Internet. Hosting high speed content and applications on secure servers, the MultiMedia Gateway is truly your doorway to the future of multimedia applications. With a BC TEL MultiMedia Gateway membership, you'll be able to play high speed, multi-player games or engage in high quality video conferencing. And, you'll be able to take advantage of newer high speed content and applications as they become available.
  • Unlimited connect time and up to 1 gigabyte of traffic per month. Your BC TEL MultiMedia Gateway service provides you with unlimited connect time and 1 gigabyte of free traffic per month. You are only charged for the amount of data you download and upload each month in excess of 1 gigabyte. If you require additional capacity, you can choose from a variety of service packages.
    To help you determine which service package fits your usage best, you receive a 1 month trial period of unlimited capacity with your subscription. After this trial period, you can choose the service package that most economically meets your needs if you require more than 1 gigabyte of traffic per month.
  • Installation and rental of an ADSL modem. Rental of your ADSL modem is included in your monthly membership fee. A rental modem means that BC TEL can upgrade your modem when new technology becomes available. A one-time fee of $149.95 covers the installation of the ADSL line in your current residence.
  • Special services for CSP Internet ADSL Edition members. As a CSP Internet ADSL Edition member, you receive up to 5 family e-mail accounts, hosting for a free Personal Web Page and up to 5 megabytes of storage. And to help you stay in touch, you get 5 hours of free roaming access for regular dial-up Internet access and checking your e-mail while you are travelling within service areas in British Columbia.
  • Help desk support. CSP Internet customer, you will receive full help desk support 9am to 9pm, Monday through Friday plus weekend support Saturdays, 9am to 5pm and Sundays noon to 4pm.

How it works:

The BC TEL MultiMedia Gateway harnesses ADSL technology to bring you high speed Internet, and much more. ADSL technology divides a single telephone line into 3 "channels," allowing you to use the telephone at the same time as you are using the Internet, without affecting voice or data transmission or quality. One BC TEL residential telephone line allows you to have:

  • continuous, uninterrupted telephone service,
  • a 1-4 Mbps downstream data channel to your house, and
  • 160-640 Kbps upstream data channel to the MultiMedia Gateway and Internet.

All this is done through an ADSL modem in your house, an ADSL modem at the other end of your phone line in BC TEL's local central office, and some specialized equipment to allow your computer and telephone to work at the same time.
